A floor is only as good as what is under it

Almost every flooring complaint traces back to the same place. A plank that clicks underfoot, grout that cracks in a line, a board that lifts at the edge of a doorway — none of those are really failures of the flooring. They are failures of the surface it was laid on.

So that is where the work starts. The old floor comes out, the subfloor gets checked for flatness and movement, high spots are ground down and low spots filled. Only then does anything new go down. It is unglamorous and it is the part that decides whether the floor is still flat in five years.
